Divya Darshan

Divya Darshan is the free darshan TTD reserves for pilgrims who climb to Tirumala on foot. You collect a free token on the footpath, and it sends you through a dedicated line at the temple that is shorter than the open Sarva Darshan queue. Srivari Mettu footpath tokens are issued from 5:00 AM to 6:00 PM with no ceiling limit, and Alipiri footpath tokens are issued at the Bhudevi Complex near the Alipiri base. The token is valid only if you actually walk the matching route. This article covers the concept, the two paths, the token rule, and who Divya Darshan suits.

The idea behind Divya Darshan

Climbing the hill on foot is a centuries-old vow for Venkateswara devotees. Divya Darshan honours that by giving foot pilgrims a separate, faster darshan than vehicle pilgrims, at no cost. The free token you pick up on the climb is checked at Tirumala, and Divya Darshan holders move through their own compartments, which on a busy day can save several hours over Sarva Darshan.

The two footpaths

  • Alipiri footpath: the classic route from the Alipiri base in Tirupati, about 3,550 steps; tokens at the Bhudevi Complex.
  • Srivari Mettu footpath: the shorter route, about 2,400 steps; tokens issued 5:00 AM to 6:00 PM with no ceiling limit.

Both paths are covered for long stretches, lit at night, and lined with drinking water points, canteens, medical aid posts, and CCTV. The Alipiri base has a security screening point. Most fit pilgrims finish Alipiri in 4 to 6 hours and Srivari Mettu in 2 to 3 hours.

The matching-path token rule

TTD makes a Divya Darshan token valid only if you reach Tirumala by the matching foot route. A token issued for the Alipiri path is honoured only if you complete the Alipiri climb, not if you switch footpaths or take a vehicle partway. This stops people from collecting a token and then driving up. Keep the token through the walk, because it is verified before you join the Divya Darshan line.

Who Divya Darshan suits

Divya Darshan suits reasonably fit pilgrims who want both the merit of the climb and a quicker darshan than the free vehicle queue. It is less suited to those with mobility issues, very young children, or anyone short on time, who are better served by a booked Rs.300 slot or, if eligible, the senior-citizen and divyang line. The climb is the price of the faster darshan.

For what it’s worth, the Srivari Mettu route is the smarter pick for most walkers; at roughly 2,400 steps it is markedly shorter than Alipiri yet earns the same free Divya Darshan token, so you save time on both the climb and the darshan line.

Common questions

Does Divya Darshan cost anything?

No. Both the token and the darshan are free, and Srivari Mettu tokens have no ceiling limit. TTD provides it to reward foot pilgrims. Your only costs are laddu prasadam at the exit and whatever you spend on the climb. Never pay anyone for a Divya Darshan token; it is issued free on the footpath.

Can I take a vehicle and still use the token?

No. The token is valid only if you complete the matching footpath on foot. TTD ties the token to the route to prevent people from collecting it and then driving up the ghat. If you come by vehicle, you use Sarva Darshan or a booked Rs.300 Special Entry slot instead.

How many steps is each path?

The Alipiri footpath is about 3,550 steps and the Srivari Mettu footpath about 2,400 steps. Alipiri takes roughly 4 to 6 hours and Srivari Mettu 2 to 3 hours for a reasonably fit pilgrim. Both are covered, lit, and have water and medical posts, so the choice is mainly about distance and time.

When are tokens issued?

Srivari Mettu tokens are issued from 5:00 AM to 6:00 PM with no ceiling limit. Alipiri tokens are issued at the Bhudevi Complex, with timings TTD adjusts, and some footpath counters operate around the clock. Start the climb early so you reach Tirumala in daylight and avoid the midday heat on open sections.

A limitation worth noting

One limitation worth noting: the Divya Darshan token counters have moved between locations, including to the Bhudevi Complex pending Archaeological Survey of India clearance, and issuing hours are adjusted by TTD. The step counts and timings here reflect current official information, but verify the active counter and hours on tirumala.org or at the Alipiri base before you start the climb.
