TTD Archana Seva: Personal Archana with Gotra

Archana at Tirumala is the ritual recitation of the Lord’s names with an offering, and in the daily temple order it is performed each morning after Thomala Seva, when the deity’s 108 names (Ashtottara) and the Sahasranamarchana (1,008 names) are chanted. Devotees who want their own name and gotra (family lineage) read out during worship book the relevant Arjitha seva through the TTD portal. The closest participatory archana-style seva, Ashtadala Pada Padmaradhana on Tuesdays, costs ₹1,250 per ticket and includes single laddu prasadam. Exact rates and timings are set by TTD, so confirm them on tirumala.org before booking.

What Archana means at Tirumala

Archana is the recitation of the deity’s names while offering tulasi, flowers or other materials. In the daily Tirumala routine the priests perform the Ashtottara Sata Namavali, the 108 names of Venkateswara, and on the prescribed occasions the Sahasranamarchana, the full 1,008 names. The gotra and name of the sponsoring devotee can be invoked at the start, dedicating the worship on their behalf, which is why many pilgrims specifically seek an archana in their family name.

Where the gotra comes in

A gotra is the lineage or clan name traced to a particular rishi, and in Hindu ritual the sankalpa (the formal statement of intent) names the devotee, their gotra and their wish before the worship proceeds. When you book an archana-style seva and provide your name and gotra, the archaka includes them in the sankalpa so the seva is offered in your name. If you do not know your gotra, the convention is to use “Kashyapa gotra”, a widely used default.

Participatory archana sevas you can book

  • Ashtadala Pada Padmaradhana (Tuesday): reporting around 05:00 hrs, seva at 06:00 hrs, ₹1,250 per ticket. The Lord’s feet are worshipped with 108 golden lotuses while the names are chanted.
  • Sahasra Kalasabhishekam (Wednesday): seva around 06:00 hrs, ₹850, includes abhishekam with sacred-water pots alongside archana.
  • Daily Archana and Sahasranamarchana: performed within the temple’s morning routine; participation depends on the current seva arrangement.
  • All these sevas include single laddu prasadam.

TTD revises seva rates and timings periodically, so treat the figures above as the published position and verify the current ones at booking time.

How to book and what to carry

These are Arjitha sevas allotted online through ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in, usually via an electronic dip. Log in, select the seva and date, enter the names and gotra of the participants if the form asks, and pay before the deadline to confirm. Carry the photo ID used at booking for each person, and reach the reporting point on time, since these are early-morning sevas.

For what it’s worth, devotees who care most about having their own gotra and name invoked tend to prefer Ashtadala Pada Padmaradhana over a generic darshan, because the seva is intimate, the names are clearly recited, and the golden-lotus worship of the feet is among the most visually distinct rituals at Tirumala.

Dress code

Traditional dress is enforced for all seva participants: dhoti or pyjama with an upper cloth for men, saree, half-saree or churidar with a dupatta for women. Phones and cameras are deposited in lockers near the queue complex. Because the sevas report in the early morning, a night’s stay at Tirumala is usually needed.

Common questions

Can I get an archana done in my name and gotra?

Yes. When you book an archana-style Arjitha seva and provide your name and gotra, the archaka includes them in the sankalpa so the worship is offered on your behalf. If you do not know your gotra, “Kashyapa gotra” is the common default. Confirm on the booking form whether the seva you choose lets you enter participant details.

How much does Ashtadala Pada Padmaradhana cost?

The published rate is ₹1,250 per ticket, with reporting around 05:00 hrs and the seva at 06:00 hrs on Tuesdays, including single laddu prasadam. TTD revises seva charges from time to time, so verify the current price on the tirumala.org weekly sevas page when you book.

What is the difference between Archana and Sahasranamarchana?

Archana usually refers to the recitation of the 108 names (Ashtottara), while Sahasranamarchana is the recitation of the full 1,008 names of the Lord. Both involve offering tulasi or flowers with each name. Sahasranamarchana is the longer and more elaborate of the two and is performed on prescribed occasions in the temple routine.

Do I need to know Sanskrit to take part?

No. The archaka performs the recitation; the devotee participates by being present and providing the name and gotra for the sankalpa. You do not need to chant anything yourself. Reaching the reporting point on time and following the priest’s instructions is all that is required.

A limitation worth noting

One limitation worth noting: the seva names, their assigned days, rates and timings are revised by TTD periodically, and whether a given seva lets you enter your gotra depends on the current booking form. The ₹1,250 Ashtadala Pada Padmaradhana figure and the Tuesday timing reflect the published position rather than a permanent rule. Verify the current seva schedule, costs and booking details on tirumala.org before you plan.
