Srikalahasti Accommodation — devotional illustration

Sri Kalahasti Temple offers Devasthanam accommodation in five common categories: AC Suite rooms at roughly ₹1,000, AC Double rooms at roughly ₹800, Non-AC Double rooms at ₹250–₹300, and Non-AC Single rooms at ₹100–₹150. Allotment is for a 24-hour cycle and is currently counter-only at the temple — there is no online booking system for Devasthanam rooms at Srikalahasti, unlike its TTD counterpart at Tirumala. This article covers the room categories, the documentation and rules to bring, and the alternatives if Devasthanam rooms are unavailable.

Devasthanam room categories and rates

  • AC Suite Room: ~₹1,000 per 24 hours
  • AC Double Room: ~₹800 per 24 hours
  • Non-AC Double Room: ₹250–₹300 per 24 hours
  • Non-AC Single Room: ₹100–₹150 per 24 hours

The exact rate depends on the specific guesthouse block; the Devasthanam runs multiple guesthouses with overlapping but not identical pricing. The counter at the temple confirms the available block and the current rate at the time of allotment.

Booking, in practice

Three facts to know:

  • No online booking. Unlike TTD Tirumala rooms, Srikalahasti Devasthanam rooms are not yet on an online portal. Allotment happens at the temple counter on arrival.
  • Photo ID is mandatory. All devotees produce a government photo ID (Aadhaar, Voter, Driving Licence, Passport) at check-in. Without an ID, the counter does not allot.
  • The cycle is 24 hours from check-in. Check-out is at the same clock-time you checked in, not at a standard 10:00 AM or 12:00 PM hotel convention. Plan your departure accordingly.

Restrictions on who is allotted

Two restrictions apply consistently:

  • Single occupancy is not allotted. Rooms are allotted only to families or to pairs.
  • Unmarried unrelated couples are not allotted. Devasthanam rules treat unmarried mixed-gender pairs as not eligible. Married couples are asked to produce a marriage indicator (the most common: the marriage being reflected on the photo ID or a marriage certificate carried for the purpose).

Extra-person charges, if applicable to your block, are paid at the counter at check-in. The Devasthanam does not allow additional unbooked guests overnight; security rounds enforce this.

If Devasthanam rooms are full

During Maha Shivaratri, the Brahmotsavam window, the Rahu–Ketu sarpa dosha booking peaks, and the New Year window, the Devasthanam blocks fill within hours of opening. Plan an alternative:

  • Private hotels in Srikalahasti town: several budget and mid-range hotels operate within 1–2 km of the temple.
  • Tirupati base: Srikalahasti is about 35 km from Tirupati and 50 km from Tirumala. Many pilgrims base themselves in Tirupati and visit Srikalahasti as a half-day excursion.
  • Renigunta base: the nearest railway junction with hotel inventory, about 25 km from Srikalahasti.

A practical opinion on which block to ask for

For what it’s worth, the Non-AC Double at ₹250–₹300 is the best-value Devasthanam option for a one-night stay. The AC Double at ₹800 is noticeably more comfortable in May–June heat, but most of January through October the Non-AC blocks are perfectly liveable and you save four times the cost. The AC Suite is worth booking only if you are travelling with elderly relatives or staying multiple nights.

Why people stay in Srikalahasti specifically

The principal reason for an overnight stay (as opposed to a day-trip from Tirupati) is the Rahu–Ketu Sarpa Dosha Nivarana Pooja. This is the most heavily booked seva at the temple and runs in slots through the day; pilgrims booked for early-morning slots usually stay overnight in Srikalahasti to be at the temple before sunrise. Same-day travel from Tirupati is feasible but tight if you have an early slot.

Reaching Srikalahasti

  • From Tirupati: ~35 km. APSRTC and private buses run frequently.
  • From Chennai: ~120 km, about 2.5 hours by road.
  • By rail: Renigunta Junction is the nearest major railway station (25 km).
  • By air: Tirupati Airport is the nearest (about 40 km).

Common questions

Can I book rooms in advance by phone?

The Devasthanam does not currently take phone reservations for the standard accommodation blocks; the counter is the only allotment channel. Calling the temple office to confirm peak-period availability is sensible but does not reserve a room. If you need a confirmed booking, the practical alternative is a private hotel.

Are linens and toiletries provided?

Basic linen (bedsheet, pillow) is provided in all blocks. Towels and toiletries are not provided in the Non-AC blocks; bring your own. AC Double and AC Suite blocks usually include a basic towel set; the specifics vary by block, so confirm at check-in.

What ID is accepted at check-in?

Standard government photo ID: Aadhaar, Voter ID, Driving Licence, Passport. PAN card is accepted in some blocks but is not universally treated as a photo ID. Carry one of the four primary IDs to avoid delay.

One limitation worth noting

Devasthanam rates and block availability change periodically. The figures above (₹100–₹1,000 range, 24-hour cycle, counter-only booking) reflect the consistently reported current state. The Devasthanam has been moving toward an online booking system over the past several years; if and when that goes live, the counter-only restriction will lift. Confirm by calling the temple office at the time of your visit.
